A friend's mom is thinking of selling her 2002 TL with 100k miles in excellent condition. It's an auto, and I really want a manual. But my parents are thinking of buying it as a 3rd car, so I wouldnt have to buy it myself and still get to drive it. Plus it has a v6 and I love the honda J series engine. I don't know what she is asking for it. Is it worth looking at?
*not the actual car (from google) but just like it.

Seems nice and a free way to get on the roads is never bad, I would've taken any piece of crap to get driving before I did.

The automatic gearbox in this TL generation is notoriously troublesome. I'd be wary.

My friend has had two different TLs of this generation. Both have needed transmission work.

They're nice, but there are cars that would be more fun for less money. Lots of cars.
It all depends on what you want. Nothing wrong with the TL though.

I had a 2003, and it was a great car. A little beige, but what can you do.
However, as others have mentioned the transmissions were often troublesome in a very un-Honda-like way. So if they've already had it replaced, and the price is right, I'd do it. Otherwise pass.

Oppo thinks you'll be in the market for a transmission eventually. Seriously, stay away from these cars. You can read it all over the internet about these cars and their transmission issues.

I bought a used '03 Type-S version of this car. I was weary about tranny issues, so i preemptively bought a new transmission from Acura. Both car, transmission buys were within my budget. After 2 years into owning it with 46k miles, (on top of 128k) no issues. And that engine still amazes me. I'd suggest getting a manual CL Type-S if you want to row your own gears though.

I almost bought an '03 on CL that needed a tranny for like $1,400 to flip. Then I found out the costs of a new transmission, and I stopped looking.
